Epilobium canum also known as California fuchsia, or zauschneria, is a California native plant that, in this area, loves dry rocky banks and sidehills. It is not a member of the (garden) fuchsia family. Years ago I took a cutting from up by our gate and stuck it into a pot of soil.
When it rooted I planted it in my garden. Although it’s necessary that I be sparing of water in my garden, my California Fuchsia is obviously very happy with what it must consider an abundant supply of moisture. It’s become quite invasive and spread over an area of three or four feet and grows two or three feet high.
Its parent plant, up on the dry hill, continues to creep along the ground, putting on a smaller but more prized show this time of year.
The photos are from my garden plant.
